Do not let Tumblr make you think:

  • That doing drugs makes you cool.
  • That being rude to your parents is okay
  • That being straight means you aren’t a person
  • That being controversial all the time is cool and will get you friends
  • That being blatantly rude to people to get your point across is okay
  • That being white makes you by default evil
  • That having a mental illness is cool
  • That cutting yourself is okay
  • That being a male means you are a rapist
  • That all men are evil, misogynistic monsters
  • That misandry is okay
  • That doxxing people’s personal information is okay if they said something you don’t like
  • That tumblr should be your vital source for controversial issues
  • That school doesn’t matter
  • That being narcissistic is cute
  • That making a minor mistake on a post will make the world hate you
  • That the world is a horrible place

shit man this is goddamn important because there are so many young and impressionable people on this website

If you’re following anyone on tumblr saying these things, I’d love to meet them?

A lot of the stronger statements here are classic strawman arguments. But while we’re at it… how about we break this down:

  • That doing drugs makes you cool. That all drugs are horrible things and you’re a horrible person for even considering it. Is it better to not do them? Yeah usually unless you have a condition that is fixed or helped by a drug, pharmaceutical or otherwise, it’s better to avoid psychoactive substances. That said, are things like marijuana generally considered harmless for occasional recreational use? Yeah. Are addictive and narcotic drugs still pretty bad? Yes, they can and will fuck you up. If you’re gonna do something, stick to the “generally harmless” stuff. Will drugs miraculously make you cooler? No. Is being a junkie pretty uncool? Yeah. Does this point intend to make it seem like “drugs make you uncool”? Yeah. Is that true? No, I know people in legalized recreational states who occasionally partake who are still pretty cool.
  • That being rude to your parents is okay That not thinking your parents are wonderful is not okay. Some parents are abusive shitstains. Others are bigoted jerks. A lot of them are very flawed. Yes being rude to anyone is bad when you can avoid it but sometimes there’s no reasoning with an abusive person and you have to protect your mental health and just get them away from you.
  • That being straight means you aren’t a person. This is a strawman argument. No one thinks this. Just stop.
  • That being controversial all the time is cool and will get you friends That having a strong opinion and fighting for what you believe in, even if it’s not the generally accepted standard is bad. And frankly a lot of my friends love that I’m willing to tackle controversial topics and actually Do The Research. So yeah, it can actually get you friends.
  • That being blatantly rude to people to get your point across is okay That you have to be polite to people who devalue you. Again, there’s no reasoning with a bigot. And it’s a waste of time to try. And sometimes people really do just need a shoe tossed at their head. So if you’re dealing with someone who is being a bigot or supporting oppression? Be rude! By all means! If you have the patience, yeah sure go ahead and make a detailed dissection, at the very least you can educate others. But if you’re just at the end of your rope, it’s okay to be rude.
  • That being white makes you by default evil This is another strawman argument. No one thinks this. There’s a difference between being told “you have privilege and have been raised to have subconscious prejudice” and “ur evil lol”. Statements like “white people are racist as fuck” are NOT wrong. And they should not be expected to be tamed down to “some white people are a little racist sometimes” just because some people are whiny shits. If you don’t think you are, just use it as a reminder to stop and examine your privileges and prejudices and those of the people you choose to have in your life. Some people are worse than others.
  • That having a mental illness is cool That having a mental illness makes you innately uncool. It’s just a thing you have and you shouldn’t be judged for it because that’s some ableist bullshit right there. That said, 14 year olds who decide they have depression because “like I’m so sad my fav tv show got cancelled lol” are not okay. Don’t do that. That said, if you can’t afford to get or your life situation won’t let you get psychiatric evaluation and treatment but you legitimately have done the research and believe your symptoms fit a particular condition, it’s totally okay to say “I think I have this thing” and seek self-help materials and methods to try to help make yourself feel better.
  • That cutting yourself is okay Okay yes cutting is bad. it’s dangerous and not a good thing to do. But it’s usually a sign of severe depression or some form of trauma or internal anguish or mental illness. So being just like “this is not okay” is really not the best way to go about this. Try “you should really get some professional help and find a healthy outlet” instead, okay? Okay. Same thing for stuff like eating disorders.
  • That being a male means you are a rapist Again, strawman. There’s a difference between being told “you have privilege and have been raised in a rape culture with very bad boundaries and consent definitions” and “ur a rapist lol”. We live in a culture where pulling a girl’s hair is answered with a shrug and “boys will be boys” and a “no” is seen as a maybe. If you don’t think you are, just use it as a reminder to stop and examine your privileges and views and those of the people you choose to have in your life. Some people are worse than others.
  • That all men are evil, misogynistic monsters Again, strawman. There’s a difference between being told “you have privilege and have been raised in a misogynistic patriarchal culture that has influenced your views” and “ur an evil misogynist lol”. We live in a culture where women are paid less, it’s okay to catcall a lady on her way to work, and 13 year old girls are approached sexually by creepy men old enough to be their fathers. If you don’t think you are, just use it as a reminder to stop and examine your privileges and views and those of the people you choose to have in your life. Some people are worse than others.
  • That misandry is okay Strawman? Strawman. I’m sure there are rare outliers who feel this but it’s certainly not something you’re likely to find. And there’s also a difference between “I have been hurt by men repeatedly in my life and therefore have anxiety and distrust of them for this valid reason” and “lol I hate teh menz, enslave all menz” so yeah.
  • That doxxing people’s personal information is okay if they said something you don’t like Okay I’m gonna have to go with strawman here? Does anyone actually think this? Yes there were some people doing this with like the KKK people and stuff. But I’m pretty sure the general consensus was “yes they’re assholes and it’s totally cool to spread their names and faces and locations and jobs in this one particular case because they’re actively members of a hate group but DO NOT reveal their home address or financial info because then you’re just as bad as them”. That said, doxxing someone because “they said something you don’t like” is a bad thing, yes. Confirmed hate group members are on a different level.
  • That tumblr should be your vital source for controversial issues That getting your information off the internet is a bad thing. Seriously dude, I hear about things on Tumblr that never make it to mainstream media. Including a lot of controversial issues. But when I see about them on Tumblr, I know to go Google it and usually find small non-mainstream news sources to learn more about it. But if it weren’t for Tumblr, I’d never find out about it or even know to go look. It’s a great way to find out about ideas and points of view that you’ve never encountered before. That said, blatant reblogging of unsourced “news” is not always a good thing and a lot of times people reblog a lot of really absurd things that are calling themselves “news” or “facts”. But don’t dismiss it like this.
  • That school doesn’t matter That school and a degree is all that matters. Some fields don’t need a degree. Some people aren’t good with traditional schooling systems. College is expensive and will likely land you in lots of debt, especially if you live in America. School is not the be-all-end-all. That said, learning things is good and important but it’s okay to have to go find a different way to learn things or focus on learning things you can actually make yourself learn.
  • That being narcissistic is cute I have a feeling that the particular type of “narcissism” you’re talking about is commonly called “self confidence” or “feeling good about yourself”. Narcissism is pretty damn severe, you know. It’s “excessive” self-love. There’s a big difference between “I look really hot in this outfit” or “damn I’m sexy” and “oh my fuck I’m just the hottest thing to ever grace this planet”. Yes people say the latter, but it’s nearly universally meant in a manner that’s tongue-in-cheek or metaphorical or as an embellishment of the fact that they’re really proud of how they look at the moment. These things are okay.
  • That making a minor mistake on a post will make the world hate you This is the strawmanniest strawman that ever strawmanned. Seriously I don’t even think the younger members on Tumblr would think this. Chill.
  • That the world is a horrible place Yeah you know what sometimes it is. We’ve made lots of species go extinct as a direct result of our actions. We’re constantly killing each other and finding new and creative ways to kill more of each other at once. Natural disasters rip apart lives all the time. The world is horrible sometimes. A lot of the time. But there’s a difference between acknowledging that it’s horrible and giving up hope that it can get better or failing to recognize that even a horrible place has good and wonderful and worthwhile things in it. The world sucks but it’s still worth making an effort and trying to make it better.

So uhm… yeah.
